Firman Residence

Redmond, Washington

Extensive remodeling of this once 1970s style house returned it to splendor, with new and reclaimed stone lending simple elegance throughout. The stonework was designed as the bridge between the owners deep Asian and European art collection.

Although this commission has many aspects, the hand-carved, battered polygonal masonry fireplace remains one of the works I am most proud of. The joints are so tight, one cannot put paper between them. The work is difficult to photograph but compelling in person.

Another signature work at this residence is the “wall that went for a walk”. With a nod to Goldsworthy, this granite wall meanders through the forest boundary surrounding the residence and never ceases to amuse or inspire.
