Originally commissioned for the Yellowstone Club, a private ski destination in
Montana, USA, Sentinel VI extends Rhodes’ interest in placemaking anthropometric symbols.
Positioned to engage the arriving visitor at the hotel entrance drive circle, the work is meant to be
viewed from all angles. The shallow water forming the bowl from which the sculpture rises was to
be heated, creating a strong atmospheric effect in the cold winter weather. With snow and ice
forming on the stone shapes, the symbolic mountain wraps the taller anthropomorphic forms called
Connection.
The pandemic and resulting budget cuts cancelled the commission. However, the sculpture may
be ordered in its entirety (bowl, symbolic mountain, and joined figures) or as a stand-alone form.
