This exciting new work by the Artist Brad Goldberg were executed by Rhodes’ team in Golden Granite. Six giant egg forms were hand wrought from specially quarried blocks that measured in excess of 6’ x 6’ x 8’ and weighing more than 30 tons each. Three of those egg forms were then split apart and carved out to receive solar reflectors that will power the lighting for the sculpture.
The splitting of the eggs was accomplished by resurrecting an ancient hand technique whereby 56 square holes were hand-carved into the split-line and tempered chisels were driven inwards in series. The resulting jagged texture becomes a critical visual part of the sculpture detail.
The hand textures vary from top to bottom in a gradient that ranges from honed to a modified (extra coarse) pineapple finish.
